Charity Hat with Flower

The other day I posted about a Charity Hat drive.

Yesterday I "whipped" up this little number. Not real happy with the yarn choice, but it was what I had next in the "stash" sack.

I hope you like the pattern . . . and, if you make it, I would LOVE to see your finished product.

MATERIALS USED

Worsted Weight Yard

     Sample Shown in Vanna’s Choice “Purple Print”

Crochet Hook – G

Tapestry/Yarn Needle

Scissors

Button, or embellishment, for center of flower

Thread for attaching flower.

GAUGE: Not Important, this pattern uses the

size chat at the end of the pattern to achieve

the size sweater you desire.

ABBREVIATIONS and STITCHES

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

MC – Magic Circle  (If you need help, check out my blog post http://furbabiesmomma.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-ro-make-magic-circle.html.)

popcorn stitch (pc st). Ch 4, 4 d c in same st, drop st from hook, insert hook back in 4^th ch of beginning ch  and draw loop through the one on hook.

hdc – half double crochet

rnd - round

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

sk – skip the number of sts given

sp - space

st(s) – stitch(es)

trc – treble crochet

NOTES FOR HAT

1.Work in continuous rounds (do not slip stitch or chain at the end of each round):

2. This hat can be made for any size from a preemie to an adult male. You will need to make your crown the circumference and height of the person you are making the hat for.

3 .  Check the chart at the bottom of the pattern for the circumferences and heights for different ages of individuals. Then, fill in the information you need below.

     a.       _____ Circumference of Head

     b.      _____ Circumference For Hat

     c.       _____ Height of Hat

4. To make measuring the hat easier:

     a.       Cut a piece of yarn in one color the length of the circumference of the hat.

     b.      Cut another piece of yarn, in a different color, the length of the height you need.

5. Do not fasten off. Carry un-used color until the next use.

6. HINT: To get a GREAT size match, use Styrofoam balls with the circumference of the head you want to fit. This works SO MUCH BETTER than measuring in inches.

CROWN

Rnd 1: Using a Magic Circle, ch 2 then make 10 hdc into the circle.

Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each st around.

Rnd 3: *2 hdc in the next st followed by 1 hdc in the next st,* repeat from * to * around.

Rnd 4: *2 hdc in the next st followed by 1 hdc in the next 2 sts,* repeat from * to * around.

Rnd 5: *2 hdc in the next st followed by 1 hdc in the next 3 sts,* repeat from * to * around.

Rnd 6: *2 hdc in the next st followed by 1 hdc in the next 4 sts, * repeat from * to * around.

NOTE

1.      If circumference of hat is reached before Rnd 6, skip to remainder of hat and continue from there.

2.      If you need a circumference of the hat has not been reached by Rnd 6, continue the pattern, established in Rnds 3 – 6, until you have reached the circumference you need.

BODY OF HAT

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around, around, sl st to the beginning ch 1 to join. (60  sc)

Rnd 2 - ? Repeat Rnd 1 until height of hat (measured from the center of the MC through the last Rnd) reaches the height you desire

BRIM – Continue stitching from body of hat to make the brim, *ch 3, in same st make the following (trc, dc, hdc), sc in next st, sk 1, sl st in following st,* repeat from * to * around. Fasten off and weave in end.

FLOWER

Rnd 1: Using a Magic Circle, ch 1 then make 10 sc into the circle, sl st to beginning ch 1 to join

Rnd 2: Ch 4, 4 trc in the same st, finish st the same as pc st, ch 4, *pc st in next sc, pc st,* repeat from * to * around, sl st into top of beginning pc st, leaving a 10” tail, fasten off

FINISHING FLOWER

Attach flower, through the ends of the pc st’s, to hat using the 10” tail.  

Sew button to center of hat.
